This Saturday evening we will witness the first semi-final of the ATP tournament in Rio between Sebastian Baez and Francisco Cerundolo. It will be a 100% Argentinian final and Sebastian Baez will be a slight favorite to validate his ticket for the final. Indeed, Sebastian Baez was ranked 30th at the start of this tournament and his journey to this semi-final allowed him to reach 25th place, his best career ranking. In the event of a victory against Cerundolo he would still gain a few places in the world rankings. During this tournament, Baez only lost one set in the 3 matches he played. He managed to beat the French Corentin Moutet, then Diaz Acosta in the second round and finally Monteiro in the quarter-final. This is their second semi-final after reaching the last four in Cordoba. He has already faced Cerundolo four times and the two players are tied in his confrontations, 2 victories everywhere (Baez having won two of the last three). For his part, Francisco Cerundolo was 22nd at the start of the Rio Open and moved to 20th place in the live ATP rankings. He didn’t have as good a year as his opponent and had lost four of his last five matches before arriving in Rio. He was eliminated prematurely from the Australian Open (second round), was eliminated in the first round in Cordoba then Buenos Aires. In Rio, he has already lost 2 sets out of the 3 matches he played and seems in worse shape than Sebastian Baez.
