The high school sports Team of the Week and game balls for Jan. 29-Feb. 3 were announced by Howard County Times.

At his initial Howard County indoor championship, Ruehl achieved victory in the shot put event with a throw of 49 feet, 2 inches. This distance was a new personal best for the senior, who had previously placed second in the first Howard County meet of the season.

Weekly Team

Alicia Hall is a junior at Oakland Mills High School and is a member of the girls indoor track and field team.

The Reservoir High School girls’ basketball team had an impressive week, securing three wins. They defeated both Glen Burnie and Howard, the reigning state champions, in two of those victories. The Gators dominated Glen Burnie with a final score of 53-29, and came from behind to beat the Lions in overtime with a score of 51-45.

Game ball No. 1

The Wildecats’ boys basketball team won two county games against Hammond and Centennial, bringing their season record to .500.

The cheerleading team of Wilde Lake, known as the Wildecats, claimed the Howard County winter cheerleading championship at Mt. Hebron on Thursday. They earned a total of 116.5 points, narrowly beating out Glenelg’s score of 116 to secure their win.

Game ball No. 2

Hall was a crucial member of the Scorpions girls team that won the Howard County title. In the triple jump event, she achieved a distance of 39 feet on her first try, breaking the Howard County record. This puts her in first place in Maryland and 20th place nationally. She also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 17-2.25.

Last week, Shelton was a dominant presence in the key for the Gators, leading them to three consecutive wins. In the first game against Glen Burnie, she recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. In the second game against Howard, she scored 10 points, with six of those coming in overtime, and also contributed nine rebounds and three steals. Shelton finished off the week by tying for the highest scoring player with 12 points in a victory over Marriotts Ridge.

Senior Logan Ruehl from Mt. Hebron is a member of the boys indoor track and field team.


The Howard County Times will select a Team of the Week and award three game balls to the best performers in all sports throughout the county on a weekly basis.
