Annual Car Delivery Event Held in Havana: Honoring Cuban Athletes and Trainers

Madrid/Four months after the last annual car delivery organized by the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of the Republic of Cuba, the scene was repeated this Monday at the Coliseum of the Sports City of Havana.

The official press has not specified the number of winners this year, including retirees, trainers and practicing athletes, although it mentions the names of 18. Among them, gymnast Erick López stands out, in charge of leaving the quotes of the day. “We are proud to evoke Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, eternal and undefeated leader of the sports movement to which we owe ourselves. On behalf of those recognized, we reiterate that we share this joy from the multiplication of the commitment to the homeland and the work that has placed Cuba on the international stage,” he expressed.

The memory of the leader of the Cuban Revolution is a classic of the event. Wilmer Lewis Calvo, president of the National Athlete Care Commission, also spoke along those lines. “We are encouraged to surround ourselves with men and women recognized as symbols by a fan that applauds the displays of humility, dedication, commitment and dignity with which they achieve their competitive successes,” he began in his speech presenting the brand new Peugeot. And he continued: “We do it with the additional motivation provided by the conviction that this is a meeting that pays tribute to the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, who turned this sector into a right of the people and led the attention to its most outstanding exponents.”

Among the lucky ones currently active are Rafael Guerra (sports shooting), Luis Esteban Fuentes (para-athletics), Juan Caballero (wrestling), Gisell González (fencing), Eusebio López (Basque ball), Guillermo Pérez (para-athletics), Andy Granda (judo ) and Alain Román (softball). It was also given to trainers of Olympic and world medalists such as Rolando Acebal (boxing) and Daniel Osorio (athletics) and Jhoen Lefont, who has several Guinness records for ball control in water.

Of those retired, the official note highlights Mercedes Calderón (volleyball), Luis Giraldo Casanova and Pedro Medina (baseball), and Sibelis Veranes (judo), but specifies that there were “others.” In addition, three more athletes received the gift last Saturday, in an early ceremony: the wrestlers Gabriel Rosillo and Oscar Pino, and the canoeist Yarisleidys Cirilo.

The ceremony was marked by the joy that had come from the victory over the United States basketball team the previous day. “Still stimulated by the recent celebration, we met today in what we could consider an extension of the extensive program of activities generated throughout the country regarding that anniversary,” said the first vice president of Inder, Raúl Fornés Valenciano, in reference to the events. for the 63rd anniversary of the organization.

The delivery of vehicles to retired Cuban athletes has been celebrated for decades in recognition of their career, although it is increasingly common for active athletes and trainers to be included, despite the fact that the measure is considered “exceptional.” The gift, however, has not served in any case as the “stimulus” that is spoken of, since some of those who were awarded at some point have subsequently left the Island, as happened, notably, with Andy Cruz, the boxer who starred in one of the most notorious escapes in 2022, including a frustrated exit due to the denunciation of his facilitator. Months ago he had received a Mercedes-Benz for his victories in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (held in 2021 due to the pandemic).

Canoeist Jorge Enríquez also arrived in the United States in March 2022, just two months after receiving, in the same event as Cruz, his luxury vehicle.

So far this year, there are already about a dozen athletes who have left Cuba in an unstoppable bleeding that, until the end of 2023, left a balance of 1,053 escapes in the last ten years.
