A Tribute to Alphonse Lemoine: The Life and Legacy of a Judo Master

Alphonse Lemoine has devoted his entire life to judo. The young judoka who signed his first license in 1951 was far from imagining the career that awaited him. Over the years he has progressed through all the levels of judo to the point of becoming one of the rare 8th dan in the discipline.

It was on November 19, 1951 that Alphonse Lemoine was the first member of the Nazaire Judo Club, a club to which he remained loyal. At the age of 90, he continued to teach kata at the Coubertin dojo.

A multi-titled judoka

Even beyond his titles (twenty-two times international and four European medals) judo was the passion of this Chantiers de l’Atlantique worker.

As he smiled a few months ago, With my wife, we used cars more for judo than for vacations.

Alphonse Lemoine knew how to pass this passion for judo on to several generations of Nazairians. People often come to see me thanking me for teaching them judo,” he declared during the same aforementioned interview.

Today they are orphans of their master. And Nazairian sport has just lost one of its absolute references.
