Yastremska Advances to Quarterfinals after Hard-Fought Victory

After just over two hours of play, Yastremska, currently 93rd in the world rankings, used her first match point to win.

“I think my heart is about to jump out of my chest. I’m a fighter, that’s why I won this match,” Yastremska said. In the first set she was already 3:5 behind and had to fend off two set points, in the second she was already 0:3.

In the round of the last eight, Yastremska will face the 19-year-old Czech Linda Nosková, who sensationally eliminated world number one Iga Swiatek in the third round. Yastremska again defeated Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousová in the first round.

Kalinskaya also made it to the quarterfinals for the first time

“I have stabbing pains,” Svitolina said later at the press conference: “I don’t know exactly what it is. It happened in the first game. I couldn’t do anything anymore, my back was completely blocked. It’s sad.”

With Marta Kostyuk, however, a second Ukrainian is in the quarter-finals in Melbourne. She will face Coco Gauff (USA/No. 4) in the round of the last eight.

Like Nosková, Yastremska and Kostyuk, Anna Kalinskaya is now in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
