Fiorentina had a golden opportunity to equalize after the referee awarded a penalty in the 75th minute. The referee pointed to the spot after VAR stated that Sommer had fouled M’Bala Nzola while trying to clear the ball.
However, Nico Gonzalez, who stepped forward as executor, failed to finish it off as a goal. The kick was too weak and was easily anticipated by Sommer.
“It was a difficult situation. I’m sure I touched it (the ball) first, the referee decided like this,” Sommer told DAZN about his attempt to clear the ball.
“We studied a lot before the match, so we knew a little what the players would do and we were ready,” he said about Fiorentina’s penalty.
This is Sommer’s 18th clean sheet in all competitions this season with Inter. Will this tough defense lead Inter to the championship ladder?
“We don’t think too far ahead, but this is the team’s hard work, how we defend with high spirit and quality, that’s why we have so many clean sheets this season,” said Yann Sommer.
