Why Lucinda Brand can still start at the National Championships with a broken nose: “They even play football with it, so why not do cyclo-cross?”

Baloise Trek Lions confirmed that Lucinda Brand suffered a broken nose from her crash in Zonhoven, but she still wants to make a bid for the Dutch cyclo-cross title next Sunday. “I don’t know why she wouldn’t try that?”, says Baloise Trek Lions team doctor Jan Mathieu. “Okay, if she falls on her nose again, it will be worse, but since I’ve known her, Zonhoven was the very first time this happened.”

Brand was in the lead when she fell on her face in the third round of the cross in Zonhoven and had to give up. After the X-ray examination, Brand said on Facebook: “I will never forget De Kuil. The nasty crash left me with a broken nose. Since I can breathe normally, no further treatment is required. This means that I am really looking forward to participating in the Dutch Championship this weekend. I’m overwhelmed by all the messages from you all, I really appreciate the support!”

Cyclocross with a broken nose, is that a good idea? “I think playing football with a broken nose is still a lot riskier than cyclo-cross. You can get a ball on the nose, a tap from the opponent… I even know football players who play without a mask with a broken nose, simply because such a mask in itself suggests that something is wrong.”

No glasses

The radiography showed that the Dutch cyclo-cross rider has a stepped fracture at the very end of the bone of the nose. “So she fell right on her sense of smell in Zonhoven. The only problem may be that she can’t tolerate glasses. Maybe so. Things are of course different with a displaced fracture or a fairly crooked nose, but Lucinda’s nose is not really crooked. She’s going to try. I agree with them. I will also go to Hoogeveen myself to see how Lucinda is doing.”

“It’s very simple: if she has to wait until that fracture has completely healed, then we are six weeks away and the cyclo-cross season is over. If she falls on it again, it will be over, but we don’t assume that,” the Kempen team doctor concluded.

There is a good chance that Lucinda Brand of Fem van Empel, Puck Pieterse or Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado will get the nod, but in the figurative sense of the word.
