This Tuesday, the Council of Ministers awarded the basketball player Ricky Rubio the Grand Cross of the Royal Order of Sports Merit, in recognition of his achievements and sports career, as well as for being “an example on and off the field.”
The minister spokesperson and head of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Pilar Alegría, announced the decision of the Executive after the meeting of the Council of Ministers to grant Rubio the highest distinction of the Royal Order of Sports Merit, Also awarded to other athletes such as Rafa Nadal or Pau Gasol.
“Great stars of our country have received it, from Conchita Martínez, Teresa Perales, Carlos Sainz, Gervasio Deferr, Rafa Nadal or Pau Gasol himself. We understood that his record and his career also made him deserving of this recognition, because he is an example on and off the field,” said the minister.
Ricky Rubio, from 33 yearsannounced on August 5 of last year that he was stopping his professional activity to take care of his mental health and on the 4th he confirmed his retirement from the NBA after twelve seasons in it, after the agreement reached with the Cleveland Cavaliers to terminate his contract.
