Victory with KAS Eupen in a 5-minute catch-up game

In a strange way, coach Florian Kohfeldt secured an important victory with the Belgian club KAS Eupen in the fight to stay in the league. The 41-year-old and his team won the strange “eleven-minute duel” against rivals RWD Molenbeek 1-0 (0-0).

The unusual thing about it: The first division game was canceled on Sunday in the 86th minute after the home fans threw smoke bombs and other objects onto the field twice. Nevertheless, Kohfeldt’s team had to make the almost 300-kilometer bus trip to the greater Brussels area again on Wednesday in order to finish the game behind closed doors.

“Use the second chance”

The newspaper “Het Laatste Nieuws” wrote about the “five most bizarre minutes in the history of football”. In fact, including injury time, there were eleven. Eupen with former Bundesliga professional Kevin Möhwald saved the lead over time after Renaud Emond’s goal (58th). This meant that the fourteenth place in the table moved within three points of Molenbeek. Both teams are in the last four, which have to go into the relegation round.

“It would be a sign of good sportsmanship if RWDM would simply let the time pass,” said Kohfeldt immediately before the restart. “We simply deserved the win. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that the game was over on Sunday evening.”

His colleague Claudio Cacapa, however, urged his team to “take advantage of the second chance” – but in vain despite two good opportunities. The coach also spoke of a “bizarre situation. It’s the first time I’ve experienced something like this.”
