Veteran Hsieh Su-wei and Partner Elise Mertens Claim Australian Open Doubles Title

Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens won the doubles title at the Australian Open.

The 38-year-old from Taiwan and her partner from Belgium, who is ten years her junior, prevailed in the final on Sunday with 6:1, 7:5 against Jelena Ostapenko/Ljudmyla Kitschenok (Latvia/Ukraine).

Hsieh, who celebrated her seventh major title and had already triumphed in mixed doubles in Melbourne this year, is the second oldest Grand Slam winner in doubles. Only the American Lisa Raymond was eight days older when she triumphed in New York in 2011. Mertens was happy about her fourth Grand Slam trophy in doubles.

Laura Siegemund also wanted to play for the title, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals with her new partner Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic).
