Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the top candidate to become coach of the Turkish top club Besiktas, report VI and the AD Tuesday. But he would only want to join if current NAC Breda coach Jean-Paul van Gastel became his assistant.
Van Bronckhorst is said to be approaching an agreement with Besiktas. A multi-year contract is ready in Turkey for the 48-year-old Rotterdammer. If he actually starts working in Istanbul, Besiktas will be his fourth club as a trainer.
But Van Bronckhorst would only want to sign with the current number five of the Turkish Süper Lig if Van Gastel accompanies him. Van Gastel has only been NAC trainer since September. Van Bronckhorst previously worked with him at Feyenoord and Guangzhou City.
Besiktas would like to meet Van Bronckhorst’s demand and be prepared to pay a transfer fee, but NAC would not be keen to let Van Gastel go. Van Gastel himself would like to make the switch.
Van Bronckhorst was previously trainer of Feyenoord, with whom he became champion once in three seasons and won the TOTO KNVB Cup twice. Van Bronckhorst then worked for the Chinese club Guangzhou City and Rangers FC.
He was fired from the latter club in November last year, a few months after helping the Scottish club to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in a long time. The former international has been without a club since then.
Besiktas is having a weak season
Besiktas has been without a coach since the end of November, after the departure of Burak Yilmaz. The former Turkish top striker, who played for Fortuna Sittard between June 2022 and June 2023, resigned after just one month. Yilmaz had only been coach of Besiktas for a month, succeeding Senol Günes.
Besiktas is having a disappointing season in the Turkish Super Lig. The sixteen-time national champion (last in 2021) is in fifth place, fifteen points behind the (shared) leaders Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.
Besiktas also had little success in Europe this season, which finished third in a Conference League group with Club Brugge, Bodø/Glimt and Lugano. As a result, the club has been eliminated from Europe this season.
