Tons of disused cables affected 91 light poles – El Sol de México

The Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, Myriam Urzúa, reported that the weight in tons of disused cables affected 91 light poles, as they were hanging from them.

The Government of Mexico City, together with telecommunications companies such as IZZI, Telmex and Megacable, removed seven tons from September to December 15, 2023, due to the cables causing accidents on motorcycles and the collapse of light poles, also because they were a risk for pedestrians.

“This agreement addresses the problem of leaning poles of which, from September 2023 to date, we have issued 91 requests that have been attended to according to the work capacity of the companies,” the capital secretary mentioned yesterday.

The head of Government of Mexico City, Martí Batres, reported that they have removed 626 kilometers after the agreement signed in 2023, as reported by El Sol de México on January 2. He also assured that this year work will continue to remove more disused cables.

“We made this agreement with the Chambers that have to do with the television, cable television, Internet, and telephone industries.

“We made an agreement so that they would remove the disused cables that form tangles in some points or that are scattered, that are lying in the street, connected above, lying on the floor, however, that is, falling from the poles, but with risk for the people who are passing by,” said the head of government during the conference.

Of the total cable removed, 164 kilometers were from the Telmex company, 169 kilometers from Totalplay; 237 from IZZI, as well as 21 from Megacable.

This newspaper reported that in 2023 the City Government received 5,142 requests for cable removal through the SUAC, of ​​which 3,501 were still open.

The companies with the most withdrawal requests are IP Matrix, with 857; Telmex, with 738; Mega Cable, with 557; Totalplay, with 520; and IZZI, with 273.

In addition, reports indicate that the municipalities with the most cables removed are Azcapotzalco, with 139,857 meters; Coyoacán with 67 thousand 987 meters; and Tlalpan, with 51,321.
