The Transformation of Nick Kyrgios: From Tennis Bully to Beloved Commentator

Nick Kyrgios has often caused red heads among tennis fans in the past with numerous unsportsmanlike acts and arguments. Some felt well entertained by Kyrgios, but the “tennis bully” was always a thorn in the side of many.

This year the 28-year-old missed the Australian Open due to injury. Instead, the Australian is working as a commentator at the home Grand Slam. The tennis star comments on tennis matches as a TV expert for the television station ESPN. And in this role Kyrgios knows how to please.

The tennis star is praised from many sides on social media. Various video excerpts with his commentary are going viral on TikTok, for example. The tenor: Anecdotes about the players and tactical assessments enhance the TV experience.

Novak Djokovic is also convinced of the new tennis commentator. During his quarterfinal match against Taylor Fritz, the Serb turned around once and sent air kisses towards the commentary booth. Kyrgios laughs embarrassedly.

He heard that Djokovic visits a tree in the Royal Botanical Garden before every game. “I want to win this Grand Slam too,” explains Nick Kyrgios.

Djokovic answers with a wink: “You have to take off your shoes, climb to the highest branch and let yourself dangle there for 33 minutes.” He then adds more seriously: “I hope we see you again soon with a bat in your hand.”

For once, criticism of the controversial Australian is limited. On “X” several fans express the wish that Kyrgios should stick to commenting. He recently described rumors about the 28-year-old’s possible resignation as “nonsense” in an Instagram video.

In his column in an Australian newspaper, Kyrgios also recently wrote: “Life after tennis is a perspective that I find exciting.” He mentions traveling around the world and commentating on sporting events as an option. He would apparently also consider having his own TV show.
