The Stoic Lifestyle of Shohei Ohtani: A Once-in-a-Millennium Talent

Shohei Ohtani (29 years old) transferred from the Angels to the Dodgers. I’m looking forward to seeing how he shines as he meets new commanders and teammates in his new world. Before the opening day, we would like to introduce another episode about Otani’s stoic lifestyle from “Shohei Otani: The Birth of a Two-Wield Major Leaguer” (& Books). (First published: March 20, 2019/All ages, titles, etc. are at the time)《Second part of all 2 parts/Continued from the “Beloved Locker Room” edition》

San Diego Padres pitcher Kazuhisa Makita met Shohei Ohtani for the first time in a while that day. Makita was playing for the Saitama Seibu Lions in 2013, when Otani debuted as a professional baseball player with Nippon-Ham.

It seems that the commotion around Otani’s debut did not leave much of an impression on Makita.

“I don’t remember much,” Makita said through an interpreter with a laugh.

Still, I had a good grasp of the match results.

“I’ve played against him seven times in Japan, and I’ve never been hit once.”

Makita wasn’t surprised by Ohtani’s success in his first year in the majors. Since he showed enough ability in both pitching and hitting in Japan, I think it’s only natural that he will be successful in the major leagues.

“Considering how active he is both in Japan and here, I think he is a once-in-a-millennium talent,” said Makita, who was selected as an All-Star twice with the Lions. “I think he’s that special of a player.”

No matter how many times I invited Otani to dinner, he refused.

Ohtani’s unique talent shines on the field as he became a star player for the Angels. When asked if the rumors that he only thinks about baseball are true, Makita replied:

“It’s true. I’ve invited people out to dinner a few times in Japan, but they’ve turned me down. They’ve given me some excuse, or they’re just not keen on it. But that’s also because I love baseball, so I’ve come to practice. It’s because I want to devote myself to it.There are some players who say it’s more fun to go out with girls.Shohei was the type of person who was all about baseball. Most players have hobbies and things they like other than baseball. For Shohei, baseball is all he wants to do besides baseball. I think he’s happy to practice, go to games, and always play baseball.”
