The Port of Vigo will implement OPS technology before 2025 |

The company Iberdrola Spain will carry out the installation of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology in the Port of Vigo (Spain) with the aim of achieving decarbonization. This technology will allow renewable energy to be supplied to satisfy the electrical demands of docked ships, thus reducing levels of atmospheric and noise pollution.

The initiative is aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s goals to achieve net zero emissions in maritime transport by 2050, as well as the European Commission’s Fit for 55 package, which proposes boosting the use of electricity in ports as part of measures to achieve decarbonization in the European Union.

The shipping companies UECC and Suardiaz will be the first to benefit from this new electricity supply point, scheduled to be operational in 2025 at the Bouzas Ro-Ro terminal. It is worth mentioning that the project has the support of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, being selected in the Sustainable and Digital Transport Support Program in competitive competition, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through NextGenerationEU.

The investment is part of the Blue Growth strategy led by the Port Authority of Vigo since 2016. The International Maritime Organization estimates that these technologies significantly reduce the noise impact of ships during port operations.

In addition, the project contemplates the possibility of using photovoltaic energy generated on site for other operators in the port environment when ships are not connected.

The electrification of Vigo’s port ecosystem is expected to be operational in 2025, with an OPS station equipped with a quick and safe connection solution to the ship, thus contributing to the reduction of emissions at the state level and promoting the integration of renewable energy in the Vigo supply.

On the other hand, the Port of Vigo has awarded the contract to carry out the conditioning of the exit road towards the Bouzas ferry terminal to the Coruña company Francisco Gómez y Cía, with an amount of 714,218.29 euros and a period of six-month execution.
