The Port of Castellón launches its new ro-ro link with Libya |

The ro-ro ship ‘Shipper’ has docked at the Port of Castellón (Spain) as part of the inaugural route of the new regular line that links the enclave with Libya of the consignee Medkon and which has Carriers Ltd as shipowner.

With this new link, the Castellón enclave reinforces its strategy to attract new markets, taking advantage of the transits offered by this line with Italy and Portugal for both import and export.

The ship, flying the Finnish flag and 122 meters in length, has docked at the Centenario dock transporting ro-ro cargo bound for the Libyan port of Misurata. This is the first service of the Mediterranean-Black Sea Ro-ro Service connection that will be covered by the ‘Aya M’ and the ‘Shipper’ and will rotate between the ports of Castellón, Misurata, Livorno, Marseille and Genoa.

The new line will join the other three that already operate in the port of Castellón with Libya, representing 4% of the total volume of import/export tons of the port in 2023.

By type of presentation, the goods moved with the North African country are distributed in 92% liquid bulk, mainly crude oil, 1% solid bulk and 7% general merchandise, especially tiles and frits.

The mentioned links have managed to move a total of 5,900 TEUs in 2023, which represents 8% of the total containers that the port area has managed. However, it is important to highlight that the volume of traffic with Libya from the Port of Castellón has decreased by 25% annually in the last year.

In addition to expanding its services, the Port of Castellón has taken an important step in the development of the Castellón intermodal terminal by entrusting Ineco with the technical supervision of the construction project. This task will be carried out with a budget of 98,789 euros.
