the last measure of the PP-Vox against Catalan

Valencia Knowledge of Valencian will score less than mastery of foreign languages of the European Union (EU) to work in public health. In other words, Croatian, Danish, Slovak, Latvian and Hungarian, for example, will end up stronger than Catalan. This is at least the draft of the personnel selection criteria presented by the Ministry of Health of the Generalitat Valenciana to the unions. The measure is known a week after the department headed by councilor Marciano Gómez announced that it will reduce the value of the command of Catalan to work as a health professional in the administration.

If the draft presented by the government of the Popular Party and Vox is approved, the mastery of the languages recognized by the EU can mean up to six points. Each language can add up to four points and, if more than one is known, six can be accumulated. Conversely, the maximum score that can be obtained to dominate the Valencian will be four.

The new scales imply a reduction of between 50% and 66% of the score provided by the knowledge of Catalan and affect all levels. If previously Valencia’s C2 title – the highest – added up to six points, now it will be worth four. In the same way, levels C1 and B2 will be reduced by 50% – from six to three points and from four to two respectively. Finally, the B1 will go from being rated in three points to just one (a reduction of 66%).

Proficiency in Catalan is no longer a requirement in the Balearic Islands

The measure follows in the footsteps of the government of the Balearic Islands, which in the summer approved the elimination of the language requirement and its downgrade to the category of merit.

In the case of the Valencian Country, with the exception of the field of education, knowledge of Catalan has never reached the requirement category. When it came closest to being so, it was during the last legislature, when the PSPV, Compromís and Unides Podemos reached an agreement for its implementation. Finally, however, they did not arrive in time to approve it.

These measures of the Valencian and Balearic governments collide with the will of the citizens. At least this is what the InformeCat of the Platform for the Language says, which states that 81.8% of the inhabitants of the Valencian Country and 67.6% of the Balearic Islands believe that the State officials who serve the public do that they should know Catalan. And if the officials are from regional and local administrations, the consensus is even greater: 89% of Valencians interviewed and 75% of islanders are in favor.
