It is always good to know the origin of great events. And for Chile, the ‘Roja’ is a fundamental part of the fans’ lives. For this reason, at PrensaFútbol we remember the first game of the national team, which had a player of British origin, Frank Simmons, as the initial scorer.

With barely 15 years of existence of the Football Association of Chile, the oldest sports association in charge of football on national soil, predecessor of the current Chilean Football Federation, this sport was just beginning to take shape in the country. That is why, in April 1910, Chile received an unprecedented invitation to participate in the May Centenary Revolution Cup (05/29 – 06/12), in which the host Argentina and Uruguay also competed.

This milestone led to the formation of the first call and formation of a national team for Chile. This took shape on May 16, when a group of selectors from the first clubs in the country delivered the first payroll of the Chilean team.

The roster was made up of: LC Gibson (Valparaiso FC); Luis Barriga (Santiago National FC), Andrew Hoyl (Badminton FC); Carlos Hormazabal (Magellan), Henry Allen (Union FC), Prospero Gonzalez (Rainbow FC); JP Davidson (Badminton FC), Frank Simmons (Badminton FC), Colin Campbell (Santiago National FC), JH Hamilton (Valparaiso FC) and Arthur Acuña (Santiago Wanderers)

However, prior to the start of the tournament, Chile received another invitation to play a friendly against the Argentine team, already experienced in the sport as they had debuted in 1901. Without a coach, the national team played the first match in its history against the Argentines, on 05/27, in a 3-1 defeat in Belgrano, Buenos Aires. The first goal was scored by a British player, at that time, Frank Simmons, who opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

But they did not last long as the trans-Andeans put their experience in this sport to the test and managed to take the victory with the comeback goals, which were scored by José Viale (38′), Maximiliano Susán (43′) and Juan Henrique Hayes ( 68′). That match was recognized as the first official match by the ANFP, FIFA, the IFFHS and the RSSSF.
