Juancho Hernangómez Leads Panathinaikos to Victory and Final Four Qualification in Euroleague Quarterfinals

Spanish power forward Juancho Hernangómez reappeared this Friday and contributed, with 11 points in 14 minutes, to Panathinaikos’ victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv (81-72) in the fifth game of the Euroleague quarterfinals, which qualified to the Greek team for the Final Four.

Hernangómez, who had missed the three previous games due to injury, collaborated in the success of the team led by Ergin Ataman in a duel of maximum physical demand, with constant alternations on the scoreboard and minimal advantages in the first (19-21), the second (41-41) and the third quarter (58-56).

Panathinaikos’ defense at the beginning of the last quarter, which prevented Maccabi from scoring for four minutes, and the offensive display of guard Kendrick Nunn, the game’s top scorer with 26 points and 6 of 10 in triples, tipped the balance.

The resistance of Spanish international Lorenzo Brown, leader of the Israeli team with 19 points and 7 assists, did not prevent Panathinaikos from winning and after the final whistle there was an invasion of the field by local fans to celebrate qualification for the Final Four for the first time since 2012.

The Greek team will face in the semifinals the winner of the match between Monaco and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul this Wednesday (7:00 p.m.), while the winner of the duel that will also face Barça and Olympiacos on Wednesday (9:00 p.m. ) at the Palau Blaugrana will be the rival of Real Madrid in the penultimate round.
