The relationship between Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard has never been easy. But what unites the two former superstars of the league is that they both wore the jersey of the Magic, even if the three-time DPOY just tackled the franchise at the same time as the Diesel.
In 1992, the Magic drafted Shaquille O’Neal first overall in the draft. By his rookie season, he had become a sensation in the league and was already among the best interior players. After four years of good and loyal service in Orlando, however, he decided to pack his bags for the Lakers. It was with the latter that Diesel then acquired legendary status, winning three rings and an MVP.
However, his reputation in the Florida franchise is not negligible, far from it. Thus, the organization has decided that the Hall of Famer’s jersey will be retired at the Kia Center on February 13. Something that displeases Dwight Howard, as we heard in the podcast All Stars recently, given that he also played in these colors without having the right to such a distinction.
The Magic finally decided to retire Shaq’s jersey. And how many years did he play with Orlando? Four years. It’s almost madness. I played there for nine years and what we did in Orlando… No offense to Shaq, obviously his jersey needs to be retired, but I should have been the first one to see his jersey get retired.

In the space of nine years, Dwight Howard won no less than three DPOYs under the colors of Orlando while reaching the Finals in 2009. Shaqfu also went there in 1995, but without winning a single match against Houston while D12 was at least able to glean success against the Lakers. Often criticized for his stormy departure in 2012, the former All-Star nevertheless received support for his exit.

A priori, it’s impossible to say that Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard are not the best players in Magic history. As for which of them deserved to see their jersey hung on the ceiling of the Kia Center first, it’s up to you to make your choice even if it might displease D12.
