The Contrasting Payouts of Grand Slams and Challengers: Lucas Miedler’s Perspective

Doubles professional Lucas Miedler draws a comparison between Grand Slams and Challengers. And he defends Dominic Thiem.

Lucas Miedler has a good memory. When asked which tournament he played with doubles partner Alexander Erler at the beginning of 2022, the Lower Austrian answered promptly. “Forli, we’ve been there a few times.” Erler/Miedler failed in the quarter-finals of the Challenger on their last visit two years ago. The wage: 275 euros each. Gross.

24 months later, Miedler is in Melbourne. Together with Erler he is taking part in the Australian Open for the second time in a row. Austria’s Davis Cup doubles rose to the top of the world last year, but there was no sense of success at the first Grand Slam of this season. Erler/Miedler lost 2:6, 6:7 against the strong Australian duo Max Purcell/Jordan Thompson. The wage: 18,000 Australian dollars each, which is almost 11,000 euros gross. So 40 times as much as in Forli.
