Golubic was the last Swiss woman eliminated

Viktorija Golubic is the last Swiss woman to be eliminated from the Australian Open. The 31-year-old from Zurich lost in the third round against number 19 seeded Ukrainian Elina Switolina 2:6, 3:6.

The world number 85. Golubic survived two rounds for the first time in Melbourne. However, she was clearly in a losing battle against Switolina, who became the mother of a daughter in May 2022, and had to say goodbye to the large Margaret Court Arena as a loser after 64 minutes.

“Switolina has an inconspicuous game, she doesn’t do anything special, but she does it powerfully and very solidly,” said Golubic. “There aren’t many opportunities for me to take over the reins.” The Swiss woman is convinced that she has the means to do it: “But I didn’t find them today.” She can draw a positive conclusion from her start to the season. Thanks to her third-round qualification, Golubic earned around 145,000 francs in prize money and will improve in the ranking by almost 15 places.

Swiatek failed

World number 1 Iga Swiatek is eliminated early from the Australian Open. Iga Swiatek lost in the third round to Czech teenager Linda Noskova (WTA 50) after a tough fight 6:3, 3:6, 4:6.

Swiatek has never really been successful in Melbourne. The four-time winner of Grand Slam tournaments has the 2022 semifinals as her best result. Nevertheless, she will retain her position at the top of the world rankings because her first pursuer Aryna Sabalenka cannot gain any points as the defending champion.

The Belarusian Sabalenka is one of only three top ten players who have reached the round of 16, alongside US Open winner Coco Gauff and former Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova. Noskova will now face Golubic conqueror Elina Switolina on Monday.

Alcaraz in the round of 16

World number two Carlos Alcaraz was not challenged in the third round of the Australian Open. At 18, Chinese Shang Juncheng (ATP 140), who was two years younger and was there thanks to a wildcard, had to retire at the beginning of the third set with a thigh injury. Alcaraz won the first two sets 6-1 twice.

The Wimbledon winner is in Melbourne for the first time in the second week. Two years ago he failed in the third round and last year he was injured.

His next opponent Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 60) had to work much harder. The Serb won in almost four hours against last year’s semi-finalist Tommy Paul. He fended off two match points – like in the previous round against Jan-Lennard Struff. (ram/sda)
