Tackling Sexual Violence and Abuse in Sports: Results of Brandenburg Judo Club Surveys

The issue of sexual violence and abuse occurs in various sports – including in well-organized sports clubs. The violence carried out is injustice and damages the reputation of sport and trust in society. Like many other sports associations and clubs, the BJV has also actively addressed the issue. In order to better support the Brandenburg judo clubs on this topic, prevention officer Andrea Harnoth is particularly keen to talk to the clubs and has decided to survey all clubs.

This survey now took place from August to September 2023. It was divided into two surveys, each with ten questions. The first survey asked general questions about child protection and was aimed at the association itself or the association board. The main aim of this survey was to find out to what extent the clubs have already dealt with the issue, have created their own child protection concepts and what measures have been implemented to protect children and young people. A total of 22 clubs (of the current 72 clubs) took part in this survey. As a result, 72% of the participating clubs already have basic knowledge of the topic of “child welfare” and/or “endangerment of child welfare” and a large proportion of them have already attended further training on the topic (77%). The child protection concept created is being implemented without restriction by 54%, while almost 23% do not yet have their own concept or are still in the process of creating one (approx. 5%).

The second survey was aimed particularly at the people responsible in the child protection association. The focus here was, among other things, on questions about the responsibilities of the child protection officers working in the association and requests for possible support options (e.g. workshops, qualification offers, required information materials). 84.6% said that they were familiar with the role and associated tasks of a child protection officer, but only 53.8% felt well prepared. However, the majority know what measures should be taken in the event of a (suspected) child endangerment (76.9%). 90.7% would like support and further information and 84.6% are interested in a joint event on child protection.

It is very pleasing to see how some clubs have already dealt with the topic, have developed measures to prevent sexual violence/abuse and are implementing them well. The results of the individual surveys have been summarized and can be found in the links below.

Even if the individual results are quite positive, there is still a downer in the overall result – it can be assumed that unfortunately more than half of the clubs have either only partially dealt with the topic or not at all. “At this point I would like to remind you that all sports clubs have a responsibility for the well-being of the children and young people entrusted to them and that it should be a matter of course to stand up for better protection against sexual violence,” says Andrea Harnoth, motivating the clubs to move forward or to deal with this topic in principle.
