Jurgen Klopp will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. The coach announced this on Friday in a video message to the fans.

“I understand that this could be a surprise,” said the 56-year-old Klopp. “But it’s understandable. I’m running out of energy. I have absolutely no problem now, but I just know I can’t keep doing this. That’s the hard truth I have to share with you after all the years.”

Klopp has been head coach at Anfield since October 2015 and won the Champions League with the club in 2019. He also became national champion with ‘The Reds’ a year later. He still had a contract until the summer of 2026.

In addition to Klopp, his assistant Pepijn Lijnders will also leave the club of Dutch internationals Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk in the summer. The Dutchman – who has been a trainer for NEC in the past – wants to focus on his own career in the coaching profession.

It is still unknown who will take over from Klopp after this season. The German previously worked at FSV Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund. This season, Liverpool is still in the race for the national title, Champions League, FA Cup and the League Cup.
