Steven Defour: A New Challenge on the Horizon

Since November 2 and the end of his adventure at FC Mechelen, Steven Defour has been free as the air. A situation which could, however, change very soon.

Indeed last December, in an interview given to Newspaper, the 35-year-old from Antwerp had made it known that he intended to continue his coaching career but that he would still wait until January to be open to discussions with interested clubs. As a result, Steven Defour is once again ready to take on a new challenge. It now remains to be seen whether a Jupiler Pro League club will try. Currently, only Standard Liège and Kortrijk are looking for a new T1. The native of Mechelen is, moreover, certainly not going to apply for the Rouches where his arrival could, more than ever, put the local public on the nerves. Kortrijk, for its part, has, in recent hours, turned to an Austrian coach.

The story was almost beautiful

Last season, FC Mechelen, led by Steven Defour, reached the final of the Belgian Cup. In the final, the Sang et Or, however, lost to Antwerp. A Great Old who had also won everything in his path; this year. So close to the goal… bringing his hometown club back to the European stage would have been exceptional. History, however, has decided otherwise. The months that followed were even more dramatic with his dismissal. Always difficult to leave the club of your heart in these circumstances. Besnik Hasi, his successor, will therefore have to do everything to save the Malinois in the Jupiler Pro League. A mission far from won in advance.
