Spanish football star Jennifer Hermoso testified in court in Madrid on Tuesday in the case against former Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales. He gave Hermoso an unsolicited kiss after the World Cup final in August, which led to a major scandal.
Last summer, 46-year-old Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth without mutual consent after the World Cup final. That caused quite a stir in the football world and beyond.
According to a judicial source, Hermoso reiterated in the Spanish capital on Tuesday that the kiss was in no way consensual.
She also said she subsequently became a victim of harassment from Rubiales and his entourage, which “had a deep impact on her life and created a difficult and sad situation.”
When leaving the court, Hermoso responded briefly to the press present. “Everything went well. The case is now being dealt with further, it is in the hands of the justice system. I hope it turns out well.”
Rubiales, who initially refused to resign, nevertheless resigned as Spanish federation president on September 10. That same month he received a summons on charges of sexual aggression and coercion.
In an initial hearing, Rubiales denied the allegations, but a restraining order was imposed.
When all interrogations have ended, the investigating judge will decide whether there will be further prosecution by the court. Rubiales then risks a prison sentence of up to four years.
The World Football Association FIFA previously suspended Rubiales for three years. Afterwards, the Spaniard announced that he would appeal against this. A Spanish sports court also previously banned him for three years.
