#SOY / Jean Carlo León: A Latino of haute couture – El Sol de México

A worsted sweater frays with every step the model takes on the catwalk, just like her pants. Finally, an elegant white haute couture suit, made to measure, is revealed. But this was not a mistake on the part of the person who made it, but rather the concept created by designer Colm Dillane of the KidSuper brand, for the presentation of his fall-winter 2024-2025 collection.

That image went around the world through social networks a couple of days ago, during Paris Men’s Fashion Week and the model who wore the outfit was the Colombian influencer Jean Carlo León, better known as “Jashlem.”

“I felt incredible; it is very nice to be representing Latin America worldwide, I have a lot of feeling,” said Jean Carlo exclusively for the Mexican Editorial Organization (OEM).

Her participation in this catwalk is part of her consolidation as one of the favorite models of the most prestigious international fashion brands, such as Dior, DsQuared2, Prada and GCDS. However, the latter became a challenge for KidSuper due to the concept that Colm Dillane wanted to show at the show.

“I have had very crazy things on the catwalks, but this was the one that was completely out of the ordinary; we had many rehearsals and in the last one the yarn didn’t unravel because it got stuck; when I went out on the catwalk I was afraid that this would happen again, but everything went well,” says Jean Carlo.

But his participation in this collection was something fortuitous and he was about to lose the opportunity to be chosen to stand out among the other models to close the show.

“I was about to return to Mexico City, my flight left the same day as the KidSuper catwalk, then I got a last-minute call and they told me, ‘they saw your profile and they want to meet you,’ and that meant a change of plans. super strong, I immediately went to where the show would be held, I met the designer and he asked me if I agreed to participate and it became a reality.”

At 27 years old, Jean has more than six million followers, just on his Instagram account. With her height of one meter 92 centimeters, 80 kilos of weight, her facial features and her Latin personality, she has attracted the attention of the most important creative directors.

“A point that stands out a lot for me is the presence I have on social networks, that gives power and a lot of visibility. Furthermore, they find my person very curious physically; In fact, they once told me that they liked the way my black circles stood out, because I’m very white. There are many designers who pay attention to many things depending on the theme they want to show in their presentation.”

He is currently represented by the agency Nexxus International, which belongs to his best friend and manager, and it was in Mexico where he stood out in the design and advertising scene.

“I arrived in Mexico four years ago, I was making relationships and contacts by being in one thing or another. Last year I debuted for Dsquared2. I was going for a social media campaign with the brand. At the fittings (costume tests) I met the brand’s designers, who asked me if I would like to walk for them and that’s how I learned to walk on the catwalk. While at the agency, Dior contacted me and it is very important that your agency has the same vision that you have for your career.”

Currently, the trend in international models is betting on an image different from that of the 80s and 90s of the last century, where perfect male silhouettes stood out, with sculpted and marked bodies, with Caucasian-looking ones being the preferred ones, in particular, blondes. blue eyes.

“Nowadays you don’t have to be the most handsome or the most athletic to model, you simply have to have something that differentiates you from others, something that makes you stand out. Nowadays, we look for the strange, the different and out of the ordinary,” he says.

Being in this environment allows you to discover a hidden personality that you can only distinguish when putting on designer clothes and walking in front of the public.

“I acquire the personality that designers ask for depending on what the collection I have created at that moment is focused on. And when the music starts I feel energetic, euphoric with a shot of adrenaline… going for a walk and having everyone looking at you, having their eyes on me, has become an addictive sensation.

“In real life I am a fairly quiet person, I consider myself introverted and shy, that is why I am always looking for things that take me out of my ordinary self.”

These days, Jean Carlo is in Miami for work reasons, “I am developing myself in the field of acting, I discovered that I have a passion for acting, I am studying a lot to be able to present a good project, now I do many castings to see if he managed to be in that environment.

“I would like to make films and play a character that takes me out of my everyday personality, the more different that character is from me, the more I would like it. I identify a lot with the actor Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders (TV Series), The Dark Knight) he transmits a lot to me with his look and his facial expressions, it is incredible what he transmits to me.”

While that is happening, he is already friends with design greats such as the brothers Giuliano and Giordano Calza, from GCDS, the twins Dan and Dean Caten from Dsquared2, among others.

“Jashlem” does not consider himself a fashion victim, he says that his personality goes beyond a trend, because life, the more relaxed, the better.

“As for my way of dressing, I am totally relaxed, I am 99 percent casual and one percent exotic, I like to be comfortable… Loose.”

But as in any profession there are always pros and cons, and even though modeling is what I had always wanted to be, there are moments that are not so pleasant.

“The only thing I don’t like very much about this profession is that sometimes I travel a lot and I have felt a little lonely, however, I am in contact with the people I love very much and that makes me feel good.”

His perception of beauty is that each person appreciates things and gives them the meaning and appreciation they desire.

“I don’t think that what is beautiful for me is beautiful for someone else, beauty is in the eyes of the seer, maybe suddenly I see something beautiful and tomorrow it no longer seems the same to me. “Beauty is in emotions and how you feel at that moment.”

In this context, the passage of time means a risk for the career of every model, because as the years go by, success transforms as does the skin, face and appearance. But for Jean, things have changed and the issue of inclusion within the area of advertising and fashion is a very favorable issue for the future.

“I consider that the issue of inclusion today benefits us a lot, because currently, age and how you look are not so important. I have been on catwalks with models who are 30, 40 and 50 years old, tall, chubby, thin, it varies a lot… And now there are all kinds of personalities. In any case, I am investing a lot in personal projects that give me peace of mind in the future, such as real estate.”

He confesses that one of the things he enjoys doing in life is cooking and although he knows the recipe for almojábanas (Colombian bread) and arepas, cooking is not his forte. “I like to cook but if I have the opportunity not to do it, I better not do it.”

He states that his greatest challenge is to satisfy myself: “That I can say: ‘very good Jean, you did very well’, because many times people can say many things, but oneself must be the harshest judge, I want to reach to satisfy my internal judge.”
