Jannik Sinner won the first match of the exhibition tournament preceding the Australian Open, tonight he faces Ruud. Matteo Berrettini also participates

A few games to run in, then off to a smooth start. Jannik Sinner started 2024 the way he ended 2023: by winning. He did it in Melbourne, in the debut match of the Kooyong Classic, an exhibition taking place in the same city that from Sunday will host the Australian Open, the highly anticipated first round of the Slam. Sinner beat Australian Marc Polmans, number 156 in the world rankings, 6-4 6-0.

New racket, new kit tending towards lilac, Sinner took a while to get into gear: he lost his serve in the sixth game, then won nine games in a row and tried new solutions to his game that could be useful to him this season, like the the net approach and the backhand slice, which Jannik worked on between Alicante and Monte Carlo.

During the night the bar will be raised: Sinner (it will be the second match starting from 1am, live on Supertennis) will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud, in a Kooyong Classic in which Matteo Berrettini has also been announced. The Roman is not on the program for the second day, but will play tomorrow in the final one. Also during the night (from 3am Italian time) the draw for the Australian Open is scheduled: Sinner will probably meet his first opponent while he is on the court.
