Review of NBA 2K24: A Detailed Look at the Basketball Simulation Game

Publisher 2K and studio Visual Concepts immediately connect the past, present and future in the basketball simulation “NBA 2K24”. Thanks to the so-called ProPLAY technology, which is possible with the help of original recordings, the players dribble across the sparkling clean court in unprecedented realism. This year also honors the exceptional basketball player Kobe Bryant, who died far too early. Sounds like a well-rounded package, right? Our review of “NBA 2K24”.

Last year we were amazed at how the German national team lifted the Naismith Trophy, also known as the World Cup, into the air despite enormous resistance. Above all, of course, Dennis Schröder, whose dunkings often lead his hometown team Toronto Raptors to victory. Maybe that’s why one of these well-known jolts through Germany is worth looking at those championships left and right in addition to the long-suffering sport of football. What EA Sports’ former “FIFA” was – are 2K’s annual updates with their “NBA” series. Certain parallels are definitely recognizable: Visual Concepts wants to take me onto the court in atmospheric, cinematic images, while my colleagues at EA threw me straight into the Champions League final in previous years. Once you get to the main menu, the first minimal shock follows – advertising. In fact, “NBA 2K24” greets me with a pop-up advertisement to buy a few additional DLCs via the store. If you fend this off, it’s better to move on.

Of course, we can start a new career as a fresh, aspiring basketball player in “My Player” or prove our management skills in “My Team”, but since I’m not averse to even the most edgy story focus, I started with “Mamba Moments” . The unique career intersections of basketball player Kobe Bryant, who died in a plane crash four years ago, are hidden here in an extremely loving constellation. His legendary professional career from 1996 to 2016 for the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA and the five championships he won are probably the best opportunities to slip into his shoes and experience those matches yourself. In a record-breaking performance against the Seattle Supersonics in 2003, Kobe sank 12 of 18 shots from beyond the three-point line. The design of these games is particularly noteworthy, as the “ProPlay” mechanics are used and all movements occur more realistically without delays. This is already impressive in normal matches, as the immediately noticeable smoother gameplay immediately brings more control.

Fine-tuning via ProPlay feature

In general, the developers worked diligently on the gameplay parameters. Thanks to the inclusion of the right analogue piece, the throws are now a little more precise, although moving the stick almost straight down is quite demanding. Defense and passing now act more nimbly while the atmosphere has increased in bombast. Simply fun when the audience shakes with cheers. Speaking of which: If we are standing in front of free throws after a foul, our screen shakes in style. Those suffering from motion sickness can of course weaken or deactivate this in the settings. During the breaks, the cheerleaders swing their pompoms while our team confers, only in the direct close-ups do we find cause for criticism thanks to the emotionless faces. In addition to available teams, all-star teams from several decades are also available. The usefulness of collecting cards via “MyTeams” can be debated due to the underlying fun of the game, as technically tearing open packs is actually pure gambling. Hence the USK 12 classification. Especially since even die-hard NBA2K fans are criticizing the increasing number of microtransactions, and rightly so.

Technically, Studio Visual Concepts, which, among other things, was responsible for the wonderfully crazy “LEGO 2K Drive”, serves up a graphically formidable sports game with a high degree of realism. The animations are smoother than ever and those who know the sport will even be able to identify their favorite by looking at the gait. Technically, “NBA 2K24” is a double-edged sword, as on the one hand the great atmosphere is convincing, but in multiplayer the matchmaking, which is actually good, sometimes has problems, clipping occurs or other errors occur. Nothing bad, but there. We were not affected by crashes.

Our conclusion about “NBA 2K24”

For fans of digital Wilson throwing, this year’s 2K entry is a strong representative. Even more direct in terms of play, even more atmospherically dense and truly realistic thanks to the “ProPlay” mechanics. The respective player models are extremely detailed and the movements appear authentic. Even open-world gamers get a lot of food with a freely accessible Miami, although this turns out to be more of a chic, relaxing backdrop. Only the microtransactions in connection with the gambling system in “MyTeam” and a lack of a proper story campaign give reason for louder criticism.
