Ravenna’s 2024 Sporting Events: From Cycling to Dragon Boats, A Year of International Competition

A Ravenna tinged with yellow will be the one that will present itself at the appointment, next June 30th, with a sporting event with an international scope. The second stage of the Tour de France, scheduled from Cesenatico to Bologna, will be the key event of the 2024 sporting year, an event that will see almost all of the Romagna people pour into the streets in the hope of seeing the phenomena they have paraded before them. redesigned the cycling panorama, such as Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Primož Roglic, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout Van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe. Normally it is above all the cities where the departure and arrival of the stage are fully booked as regards hotels and B&Bs, so in this case Rimini as the arrival of the first stage and Cesenatico as the location of the starting village of the second, “but Ravenna will be able to count, like Cervia, Faenza, Brisighella and Riolo Terme – explains the sports councilor Giacomo Costantini – on the benefit of being framed from above and seen by hundreds of millions of enthusiasts in the four corners of the world”. If cycling in recent years has emerged from its original European bubble to win over more and more fans and talents in South America, the United States and Australia, the other major sporting event hosted this year in Ravenna will look east, specifically to those countries where dragon boats are a real cult, such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines. The dragon boat world championship for nations is scheduled in Savio di Ravenna in the first week of September, when the Standiana will turn into a sort of European ‘Pearl River’. “6,500 athletes and technicians are expected, coming from thirty-five different countries. The estimate is that the world championships could bring between 50,000 and 60,000 people here”, continues Costantini. Unlike the European Championships held in September, the World Cup represents a notable leap in quality, precisely by virtue of the highly anticipated presence of the fierce Asian teams. An event of national caliber also for artistic gymnastics, which in April, at the Pala de Andrè, will also see a stage of the Italian championships staged this year.

Also on the agenda for April, the 27th, is the international judo meeting organized by the ‘Judo Sports Therapy Centre’.

From 15 to 18 February we will dance at Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste, with the Teodora Tango Marathon: a three-day milonga with Spain as a special guest: around 1200 overnight stays are expected for the event.

Instead, we fly virtually across the Atlantic for the American football Italian Bowl, the culminating event of the national championship, scheduled for June 29th at the Benelli stadium. It’s not summer without some regattas: the Circolo Velico Ravennate of Marina di Ravenna organizes, among the other races on the calendar, also the event of national importance dedicated to the premier class of youth sailing: the Optimist, which involves children from 8 to 14 years, in the water from 18 to 20 August. The sporting year will close with the usual Ravenna marathon, scheduled for November 10th, and the youth sword championships, expected for the month of December at the Pala de André.
