Proposal to Rename Allianz Arena to Franz Beckenbauer Stadium for European Championships Faces Hurdles

Germany opens the European Championships on June 14th against Scotland – in Munich’s Franz Beckenbauer Stadium!

So far it is only a plan that is being discussed by the European Championship organizers and UEFA. The Allianz Arena could then be dedicated to the late Franz Beckenbauer (†78) for the four weeks of the tournament.

One thing is clear: During the European Championships it will have to be called something different anyway because UEFA does not allow sponsors in the stadium name. Only the Berlin Olympic Stadium and the Hamburg Volkspark are currently sponsor-free.

Instead of coldly renaming the Allianz Arena “Arena Munich”, it would then bear Franz Beckenbauer’s name.

Bet the fans would be thrilled!

When voting on Bild.de, 28% of 150,000 votes were for the Franz Beckenbauer Arena in Munich. No other proposal (including renaming Säbener Straße and the DFB Cup) achieved such a high level of approval.

According to BILD information, UEFA has taken note of an approach. However, it is becoming apparent that a renaming is difficult to implement for several reasons. One of them is that the preparation and pre-production with the name “Munich Football Arena” or “Football Arena Munich” have been running at full speed for months and some have already been produced.

What exactly happened was scandalous during the Beckenbauer minute’s silence
