The Chesapeake baseball team scored four runs in the first inning to defeat Mt. Hebron with a final score of 4-3 in the regional final.

“The four-run first inning was the main issue,” said Aaron Wilson, coach of Mt. Hebron. “Despite their strong hits, one error proved to be the ultimate downfall. The added pressure of the rain may have also affected their performance.”

The Cougars (14-5) have progressed to the 3A state quarterfinals and are currently waiting to face their next opponent. The eight teams from different regions will be reseeded before determining their next match.

But Mt. Hebron did not give up yet. In the sixth inning, the Vikings got a walk to start the rally and Colton Duffy was brought in to pitch. He gave up a run on a lucky single, but prevented any more damage with a strikeout. In the seventh inning, Duffy faced the heart of the Vikings’ lineup, including their third batter Mike Brogno who had already gotten two hits. He struck out Brogno and closed the door on Mt. Hebron, securing the Cougars’ spot in the next round.

Sisson admitted that there was a moment of tension and she struggled a bit. However, she regained her composure by taking a deep breath and easing her nerves. The energy from the enthusiastic student section fueled her, and she was ecstatic when they successfully ended the inning. This boosted her enthusiasm and motivation.
Chesapeake capitalized on Vikings’ starter Will Cucuzella’s initial difficulty with control. They loaded the bases with a walk, an error, and a hit by pitch. Subsequently, Adams and Herzberger’s well-timed hits provided enough offense for the Cougars to secure the win.

The team from Mt. Hebron (14-3) did not give up easily, creating scoring opportunities in both the fifth and sixth innings. Camryn Sisson, the starting pitcher for the Cougars, faced a challenging situation in the fifth inning when the bases were loaded with two outs. Prior to the next batter, Young spoke with Sisson and urged him to take a deep breath and stay calm.

Duffy stated that his goal was to win the game and he was determined to strike out all of his opponents. He believed that getting the first out was crucial and he never allowed himself to be defeated. According to him, not many people were able to hit him effectively and it all depended on whether or not he gave them opportunities to get on base.

Frequently in postseason baseball, a team may require a period to adjust. However, in Tuesday’s Class 3A South Region I final, Chesapeake defied this pattern.
According to Chesapeake coach Jeff Young, his team is still relishing the experience. Three members from the 2022 state championship team are currently on the team, but two are graduating. The team is not ready for their journey to come to an end just yet. Winning another state championship is not the main focus at the moment, but rather the desire to continue playing together.

During a rainy game, the Cougars scored four runs in the first inning. Dylan Adams and Keller Herzberger played a key role in this rally with two-RBI singles each. Despite multiple attempts from top seed Mt. Hebron to make a comeback, the Cougars were able to secure a 4-3 victory thanks to their early lead.

The experienced player, part of the Cougars’ 2022 state championship team, remained focused during a crucial moment. Throughout his four years playing, Sisson has developed the mental aspect of his game and doesn’t let outside distractions affect him. He successfully got Luke Evans to ground out and quieted the Vikings’ potential comeback. He then celebrated with a pump of his fist and exchanged words with the lively Mt. Hebron student section near the fence.Mt. Hebron — 101 001 0 — 3 8 1
