Leuven –

Next weekend the national badminton championships will take place at the Bart Swings Sports Center in Herent. The organization is in the hands of Badminton Flanders in collaboration with Badminton Club W&L. Eye-catchers include Lise Jaques, who has now won thirteen titles, and Julien Carraggi, still in the running for a ticket for the Games in Paris.

Thirteen national titles in doubles, that is the wonderful list of achievements that Lise Jaques can present at the moment. Last year, the 25-year-old player from Wezemaal was able to take a seat on the highest podium twice. In the women’s doubles, medical student Lien Lammertyn from Neerijse was her partner. In the mixed doubles, Izegem’s Senne Houthoofd contributed to the success. “The ambition to add two more titles is of course there, but due to a chronic knee injury I had to take a break for a while. In the meantime, I have made a lot of progress, but the problem is certainly not yet 100 percent solved,” says Jaques, who obtained her physiotherapy diploma this summer.

“I will continue my studies at KU Leuven,” she explains. “I started a two-year course in Management. With the knowledge I gain through both courses, I plan to work on healthcare in companies, among other things. In the meantime, I hope to further improve my playing level in badminton. Together with Lien I was able to win the Flemish title again. I can also regularly work in the French competition. It has been a bit more difficult lately to be able to play international tournaments, because few budgets are available. In the future it will be important to find tournaments where travel is limited.”

Revenge

Julien Carraggi wants to take sporting revenge this weekend. Last year, the BC Dilbeek player failed in the semi-finals against Charles Fouyn, who in turn lost to Elias Bracke in the final. But Carraggi, fully in the running for an Olympic ticket, had other cats to flog in recent weeks and months. Last week he took part in the Indonesian Masters in Jakarta. “One of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. The top 32 of the world were present here. There was also no lack of atmosphere. The game was played in front of as many as ten thousand spectators.”

Carraggi defeated the Czech Jan Louda in three sets in his first match. “In my second match I had to face the Chinese Lei Lan Xi, a guy who is a lot higher on the world rankings. I did lose 21-17 and 21-15, but I feel that I am making more and more progress. And there are now a series of opportunities. For example, there are tournaments in Germany, France and Spain on my program in the coming weeks. I will definitely go for a medal at the European Championships in Saarbrücken. I am currently 46th in the world rankings and will now do everything I can to get to the top 32 as quickly as possible. Regardless, I still believe wholeheartedly in an Olympic qualification.”
