Popularizing Badminton in Mayotte: League Offers Training to Teachers

From Monday to Wednesday, the Mahoraise Badminton League offered several teachers the opportunity to follow training with the aim of then teaching this discipline to their students. A first step to popularize this sport, which is still on the fringes in Mayotte.

Offering something other than football or basketball to schoolchildren is the objective of the training which was held for three days in the gymnasium adjoining the Bouéni M’Titi college, in the commune of Dzaoudzi-Labattoir. This Wednesday, the last day of training for the dozen Physical Education and Sports (PES) or School teachers came to discover badminton. “ We had twenty people registered, which is the maximum number of places. But with the roadblocks, not everyone could come », Comments the president of the Mahoraise Badminton League, Matthieu Gouzou, created a year ago.

This is the first training offered by the league. At the end, participants obtain an internationally recognized certificate which supports their quality as an instructor in this racket sport. It is supported by the League and open to all, as evidenced by the fact that most of the apprentices present this Wednesday are new to this discipline. “ Badminton is a fairly confidential sport here. Few Mahorais practice it. The aim of this training is to develop this activity on the island », Explains the president of the league, himself a PE teacher at Kwalé college, in Tsoundzou 1.

Three intense days and sources of aches

To accomplish this mission, an approved instructor came specially from Reunion Island. This is Didier Nourry, also regional technical coordinator for the New Reunion Badminton League. “ I am relatively surprised by the level of the participants. There is progress », notes the one who wishes to democratize badminton. He is also delighted to see that this training, followed on a voluntary basis, has attracted so many people.

Far from simply exchanging shuttlecocks over the nets, badistes (badminton players) follow specific exercises, which they can then reproduce with their different classes. “ Double if » to learn to limit your number of mistakes, work on your serves with an opponent who has to retrieve the shuttlecock from a basket… These were three intense days and sources of aches that the teachers spent.

“We are less used to racket sports in Mayotte”

« I don’t yet play badminton with my students, but I came here with the objective of setting this up, and also for pleasure”explains Ulysse, PE teacher at Majicavo college, in the commune of Koungou, to justify his presence.

« We have been offering badminton to our students since the opening of the gymnasium in our establishment a year ago », begin Robin and Benjamin, both PE teachers at M’Gombani college, in Mamoudzou. “ We are less accustomed to racket sports in Mayotte, so we wanted to offer them », Continues Benjamin. “ With this training, we have concrete content, video resources that we can use with our students », concludes Robin, who is happy to have more elements to better structure his lessons.

« We do it with the means we have in our establishments. Usually I offer athletics, football or basketball to my students. I would like to offer them something else with badminton and we are in the process of seeing with the League how we could have equipment », Tells us Soraya, a school teacher in Pamandzi. Just like the shuttlecocks in the Labattoir gymnasium that day, everyone hopes that badminton can take off in Mayotte.
