Paris 2024: The Return of the Olympic Games to the City of Lights

In 200 days, Paris will be the scene of the most important multi-sport event in the world, a sporting celebration with a century of history. After 100 years, the Olympic Games will return to the French capital in 2024.

Paris will become the second city to host the Summer Olympics for the third time after hosting the event in 1900 and 1924, and will do so with unprecedented events.

Firstly, the Organizing Committee of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games transformed the concept of the Opening Ceremonies and, for the first time in the history of the Games, the opening will be outside a stadium. On July 26, more than half a million people will watch the first open-air parade, as the 206 delegations cross the Seine River on boats.

Likewise, Paris 2024 will be the first Olympic Games in history to achieve gender parity among athletes. From July 26 to August 11, 5,250 men and 5,250 women will compete in 329 medal events across 28 sports, including four additional disciplines: breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing.

The emblematic places of Paris will be transformed into sports stadiums to offer spectators an exceptional setting at all their venues. The Stade de France, the largest in France and which has a capacity for 77,083 spectators, will be the venue for the athletics and rugby 7s competitions.

The Roland-Garros sports complex will host the tennis and boxing events, while the Parc des Princes, with capacity for 47,926 people, will host football.

At the eastern end of the Champs-Elysées is the largest public square in Paris, and one of the most famous: Place de la Concorde. Urban sports will be played there: BMX Freestyle, skateboarding, breaking, and 3×3 basketball.

The Vélodrome Stadium, one of the two venues for the Games in the city of Marseille (along with the Marseille marina, which will host the sailing events), will also be one of the football venues.

The Grand Palais will be the headquarters of fencing and taekwondo; Champ de Mars Stadium will host judo and wrestling, while beach volleyball athletes will compete outdoors under the Eiffel Tower.

For its part, the Esplanade des Invalides will be the venue for archery and will function as the finish line for the marathon.

The horse riding and modern pentathlon will take place at Versailles Castle, while the surfing competitions will be held in Teahupo’o, a town on the southwest coast of Tahiti, an island in French Polynesia located in the South Pacific Ocean.
