Leroy Sané suspended for the next three international matches

National player Leroy Sané has been suspended for the next three international matches. He will be missing until shortly before the home European Championships. The Bayern professional was shown a red card in the friendly against Austria on November 21st. He missed the March internationals in France and against the Netherlands.

Leory Sané has to miss several games because of his assault in the friendly in Vienna. National coach Nagelsmann therefore has to reschedule in March – and also in the immediate preparation for the home European Championship.

The freakout costs him dearly. In the 2-0 defeat against Austria on November 21, 2023, Leroy Sané blew the fuses. The national player retaliated after a foul by Phillipp Mwene with a punch in the Austrian’s face. Referee Slavko Vincic didn’t hesitate for a second and showed Sané the red card. Six weeks after the expulsion, the sentence for Sané has been determined: FIFA banned the 28-year-old from the German national team’s next three games. In addition, the professional from FC Bayern Munich has to pay a fine of the equivalent of almost 2,700 euros.

Sané will therefore miss the two international matches in France on March 23rd and three days later in Frankfurt against the Netherlands. To do this, he has to watch the first of two planned games in direct preparation for the European Championship. Sané, who is a regular player under national coach Julian Nagelsmann, probably only has one game left to prepare for the home European Championship, which starts on June 14th with the opening game against Scotland.

The ban is a hard blow for Nagelsmann. He cannot use his desired formation for the tough tests in France and against the Netherlands. As a winger, Sané is an integral part of Nagelsmann’s offensive concept.

“I let the team down”

Sané apologized immediately after the game in Austria. “I have to control myself, that can’t happen, I let the team down,” said the offensive player, who is having a strong Bayern season, in the stadium. “It wasn’t anything personal against Phillipp, it was my own performance, as I said, it can’t happen to me.”

Nagelsmann and Sané can still hope for a milder punishment. Fifa’s ruling is not yet legally binding; the German Football Association (DFB) can still object to the ban.
