Michael Preetz Returns to Football as Main Managing Director for MSV Duisburg

After a long break he is back in the football business!

Almost exactly three years ago, Michael Preetz (56)’s work as sports director at Hertha BSC ended. Now, after a three-year break, he is taking up a new position with a lot of strength and energy.

BILD learned: Preetz has agreed to work together with third division club MSV Duisburg and will be the main managing director there.

According to BILD information, his working paper for the zebras is valid until 2025.

His mission: Preetz should save the third division team, which is four points away from relegation in 19th place. Not an easy undertaking.

But the new task is also a matter of the heart for Preetz, who himself played Töppen an der Wedau in the Bundesliga and 2nd League from 1992 to 1994 (71 competitive games).

Curious: With Dennis Smarsch, Alexander Esswein, Pascal Köpke, Jonas Michelbrink and Marvin Knoll, five ex-Herthan players are already in action for the Zebras.

MSV had been interested in the ex-national striker (seven appearances, three goals) for several months. However, Preetz most recently rejected the position as sports director in November.

MSV Duisburg had been after Michael Preetz for months

Nevertheless, Duisburg’s bosses stubbornly stuck with him and have now made him the main managing director. The previous dual management Thomas Wulf/Peter Mohnhaupt will leave in the spring. Preetz starts immediately.

From 2009 to 2021, Preetz was the big boss at Hertha in Berlin, where he previously played from 1996 to 2003 and is still the Bundesliga record goalscorer (84 goals).

In Duisburg, Preetz had been the absolute preferred candidate for some time. With his expertise and leadership quality, he should take over overall management, ensure that they stay in the league, build new structures and lead MSV Duisburg back into a better future.
