Mario Saint-Supéry: Unicaja or Tizona?

The immediate future of Mario Saint-Supéry, between now and the end of this season, will be decided in a matter of hours. Malaga or Burgos, there is no other option. And the CB Tizona from Burgos has asked Unicaja for the transfer of the youth squad player so that he can finish the current year in the Castilian team of the LEB Oro League and in the Los Guindos club the pros and cons of this operation are being studied, with a open debate about what would be the best option for both parties: player and club.

Unicaja’s idea until this week was for Mario to remain in the first team squad until next summer and play, when the calendar allowed, with the EBA League reserve team. All this has been reconsidered by the call of CB Tizona. Mainly because of the interest of his coach, Diego Ocampo, who already wanted Mario on loan last summer and who has now returned to the fray due to the departure of his point guard Dídac Cuevas for Casademonat Zaragoza.

Ocampo: “Mario is an option, there are many on the market”

Ocampo himself spoke on Friday in the Castilian city about this operation and his words were clear: “We are looking for a player who fits into the identity of the club, we are looking for talent, but also commitment. Not just anyone will work for us. Age doesn’t matter as much to me as finding a player who wants to improve. Mario Saint-Supéry is an option, there are many more on the market”…

At Los Guindos they are clear that Ocampo would be a perfect “teacher” for Mario if he had to leave Malaga for a few months, but there are other issues that have stopped the youth player’s possible departure to Castilian lands. And there is a clear open debate because the quota condition of the young pearl of the quarry is necessary at this time when Jonathan Barreiro is injured.

Mario played in Badalona

Mario even played a few minutes this Saturday in Badalona due to the last minute loss of Alberto Díaz from the composer expedition. Now the second phase of the BCL starts and while Barreiro remains out of combat, Mario must be among the 12 called up.

Ibon Navarro spoke out emphatically on this matter on Friday: “With Mario, everything is clear on my part. With Barreiro injured, even though Lima has returned, there are 5 places. It’s the club you have to ask, but it’s mathematics. When they ask me, I will give my opinion, but the opinion is clear: without 5 places we cannot play in the BCL. I know you have to think about him. Mario is a first team player, but he is also a club project. The question of whether he stays or goes on loan must be asked to Juanma Rodríguez.”

The club thinks about it

The club has not made a public statement on the matter. The green rectors see many good things in this hypothetical operation, but there are also structural problems in the squad if a slot is injured and Mario was not on the roster to cover that hypothetical gap.

The final decision should not take long. CB Tizona lost this Saturday on their own court against Força Lleida 72-79. The Castilians, for now, have waited for Mario, but time is running out and they need that external reinforcement to cover the absence of Cuevas.
