The Los Angeles Lakers remain at the epicenter of trade rumors and speculation, including those that go beyond the February 8 trade deadline. The Los Angeles management is not only studying how to improve the team this year, but they are already exploring different avenues of action for the offseason.
According to the journalist ESPNDave McMenaminthe Lakers “have internally discussed the possibility” of undertaking a transfer for an NBA star, expressly citing Donovan Mitchell and Trae Young.
The key to this hypothetical operation, as well as the need to wait until summer to face the negotiations with greater guarantees, lies in what McMenamin remembers. The Los Angeles franchise only has, as of today, one future first-round selection available to be used in transfers, but, starting on the day of the 2024 draft, they will be able to use those from 2024 or 2025 (depending on the decision of the Pelicans), 2029 and 2031. Three ‘picks’ which, according to this information, they would be willing to offer for a consecrated star.

Young is in his sixth season as a member of the Atlanta Hawks, in which he averages 26.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 10.8 assists per game. However, the team has not finished finding its feet in the Eastern Conference and there are already rumors that point to a major restructuring of the squad. Of course, for the moment, Young himself would not be on the market.
As for Mitchell, he is in his second season with the Cavaliers after spending the first five seasons of his career with the Utah Jazz. In 32 appearances so far he is averaging 27.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. In his case, numerous previous reports indicate that he would not be interested in extending his contract with the Ohio franchise.
Until then, the Lakers are being linked to more ‘modest’ names like Dejounte Murray, Collin Sexton, Bruce Brown or Tyus Jones.
