According to the renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, the owner of Olympique Lyonnais, John Textor, “made an attempt» for a return of Karim Benzema. Born and trained in Lyon, Benzema left France in 2009 for Real Madrid. He has never closed the door to a return since, and ex-president Jean-Michel Aulas has often kept the fantasy alive.
Benzema, 36, is having a difficult time at Saudi club Al-Ittihad, which he joined six months ago. The 2022 Ballon d’Or should, however, result in a sharp drop in salary for a return to Europe, and even more so to OL, 16th in Ligue 1.
