Judo veteran celebrates 50th anniversary of his sports school

In December, judo veteran Lothar Nest celebrated a major anniversary: half a century ago, he founded his first sports school in Mariendorf.

However, there were several moves before he ended up in his current home at Alt-Mariendorf 121. The now 79-year-old started in 1973 with the sports school on Reulestrasse, then went to Eisenacher Strasse to the building of the well-known Viktoria-Lichtspiele. This was followed by the former Polte furniture store on Mariendorfer Damm.

After another change of location, he finally found his dream property in Alt-Mariendorf in 2006. He has also housed his judo museum there with medals, trophies and memorabilia from fights around the world. And there were quite a few: During his active time until 1986, Lothar Nest took part in 681 competitions – in 70 countries and five martial arts. A good five years ago he was awarded 10th Dan, the highest award in judo for exceptional achievements.

Many companions came by for the anniversary. Among them was the CDU Bundestag member Jan-Marco Luczak, who trained with the master for several years as a boy. “Fairness, discipline and social commitment: these values characterize Lothar Nest. And that’s what he’s been teaching his students for 50 years,” says the politician. Nest’s social work impressed him at least as much as his countless awards.

He not only taught generations of children how important it is to take on social responsibility. As early as 1975 he organized fundraisers for athletes in need, in the 1980s he organized intercultural exchange programs and since 2004 he has supported seriously ill athletes in the “Judoka for Judoka” association. That’s still not everything. “Lothar looks after numerous child and animal protection projects in Africa. There he has his second center of life with a small farm,” says Luczak.
