Jandač rejected Liberec! The train isn’t running for me, but the fire hasn’t been lit yet, he says and also talks about the offer from the KHL

Why did you decide not to nod?

I’ve had excellent relations with Liberec for over twenty years, when I helped them advance to the extra league, and my return to it would probably be a logical outcome. It wasn’t an uninteresting offer, but I don’t think the Liberec organization needs me now. In all directions; A, youth, business, marketing; The White Tigers are working well.

Did it also play a role that you would like to remain a coach rather than become a manager?

I gave this aspect a lot of thought. If I decided to go and be a general manager, it would be for a long time and it would more or less be the end of coaching.

What didn’t you want?

I would somehow manage to deal with this as well. But it didn’t play a crucial role in the end. I am convinced that I could handle the function of general manager without any problems. Ctibor Jech has already reached his age (74 years – author’s note) and he told me that he would be very happy if he could pass it on. And apparently to someone else but me. But my workload would not be full at the moment, as the Liberec organization is set up. They’ll do without me for now.

Do your fingers itch? After the end in Sparta, you wanted to rest from hockey for a year, now it will be almost two…

I had offers, but I won’t say from where. On the one hand, it seems like bragging to me, and it would also be unfair to those clubs. But so far nothing has come along that has completely drawn me in or convinced me. They just haven’t lit that fire in me yet. Of course, I always follow hockey, I also have access to all foreign leagues, so I have a good overview. I don’t think I’d miss a train. As far as I’m concerned, it has to be good for both parties. Everything has to fit together.

And that hasn’t happened yet…

It didn’t happen. I have always told myself during my coaching sessions that as soon as I feel that I no longer have anything to give to the team or that I am not devoting myself to it one hundred percent, I should walk away. I have respected this principle and continue to adhere to it. Because sooner or later it would be known anyway. And if I didn’t go into it with full commitment now, it wouldn’t make sense. It wouldn’t be me.

Is it still true for you that you want to do things with people you would enjoy?

Hundred percent. And this applies not only to the implementation team, but also to the entire organization. I’m grateful for any offer who remembers me, but I’m not going anywhere. I make decisions purely by feeling.

Do you prefer the Czech extra league, or are you open to offers from abroad?

I received quite a few offers from abroad, but it never happened. Sometimes I declined with thanks, in other cases the offered working conditions did not make sense to me. It wasn’t about finances at all.

I understand correctly that you could not bring your assistants with you?

For most foreign applicants, it ended up that they already had the implementation team ready and were only looking for a head coach. And I wanted someone with me. That’s how it was before and during this season. And if you go to something during the season, you usually go to the team at the bottom of the table, because successful teams don’t change coaches.

You also had offers from the Swiss top flight. But playing for the rescue didn’t appeal to you?

I didn’t think like that, it’s also interesting from a work point of view. A successful save is then considered the same as winning the title. And playing at the bottom of the table is many times worse for the psyche. I took it as some kind of motivation, but in the end I turned it down due to the aforementioned work environment.

Did they hear from Russia too?

During the war conflict in Ukraine, I had an offer from Russia and did not take it. Although I consider my previous engagement in Magnitogorsk as a good experience, in the current situation the KHL is not a topic for me at all. I have it set to clear.

Have you heard from Vítkovice now? And at one time, Kometa, when after the end of Patrik Martinec it was not clear whether Jaroslav Modrý would stay permanently? Can’t they have enough of you at home? Your wife doesn’t tell you whether you’re looking to take something?

You know that sometimes I have to listen to such hints at home. Not so much from the woman as from the children. Before, they weren’t very used to dad being home so often (laughs). But I say that with a bit of exaggeration.
