Iga Swiatek triumphs over Sofia Kenin at Australian Open after a tough battle

She had a little scare, but the world number one, Iga Swiatek (22 years old), finally managed to get rid of Sofia Kenin (25 years old, 41st WTA), victorious at the Australian Open in 2020. Broken and trailing 5-4 in the first set, the Pole struggled to find her bearings on an overheated Rod Laver Arena (30°C in the shade). Fortunately, despite an unusual waste (21 unforced errors, against 30 winning shots), the three-time winner of Roland-Garros (2020, 2022, 2023) was able to adjust the sights at the appropriate time, to finally break away (7-6 [2]), 6-2 en 1h51).

“It wasn’t easy to find my rhythm at the start of the match and Sofia played well, credit goes to her. In the second set, I managed to raise my level of play,” judged the boss of the circuit, who will face the American Danielle Collins in the second round, defeating the German Angelique Kerber in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-1).
