Schalke 04 welcomes HSV at the start of the second half of the season. Guest coach Tim Walter revealed to RUHR24 what he expects from S04 in the second half of the season.

Gelsenkirchen/Hamburg – The start of the second half of the season has a cracker in store for Schalke 04. Royal Blue hosts Hamburger SV (January 20th, 8:30 p.m.). However, the starting position at Schalke and at HSV couldn’t be more different. The S04 are still in the relegation battle in 14th place, while Hamburg are in third place. Nevertheless, HSV coach Tim Walter is not yet writing off the “miners” in the promotion race.

HSV coach Tim Walter surprises with Schalke’s prediction for the promotion fight

Before the reunion on Saturday evening (RUHR24 reports on Schalke’s home game against HSV in the live ticker), the two teams are currently separated by eleven points. The only way for the Royal Blues to start a potential comeback is a home win.

HSV coach Tim Walter does not rule out a return of Schalke 04 to the promotion race when asked by RUHR24. “Of course I also have to say that I expect Schalke to mobilize everything again. That they go on the offensive so that they can ultimately attack at the top again through a series. Because I believe that Schalke 04’s aim is to be higher up and to make the impossible possible and we are prepared for that,” explains the 48-year-old at the press conference on Thursday (January 18th).

Schalke 04 and HSV deliver a spectacle in the first leg

Both teams have to win on Saturday evening due to the situation in the table. This could lead to a similar spectacle to the first leg. HSV won a varied game against Schalke 04 5-3 in July last year.

The S04 initially turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 half-time lead. But a quick double strike from HSV after the break gave the Hanseatic team a 3-2 lead. However, Terodde equalized this a few minutes later. But a sending off against Cisse tipped the game in favor of Hamburg, who scored two more goals in stoppage time.

HSV coach Tim Walter explained on Thursday (January 18th) that he could live with another goal spectacle, under one condition: “If it becomes such a spectacle, with the right result for us, then I’ll be happy to accept that too. Ultimately it’s about being the winner and that’s what we want to do at the weekend.”

The reality of Schalke 04 is still a relegation battle

Schalke 04 will also do everything they can to win the game on Saturday. Although coach Karel Geraerts’ team struggled a bit at the end of the first half of the season, the lead over 16th place is only three points. The direct relegation places are six or eleven points away.

Tim Walter therefore expects Schalke to be offensive: “As I said before: I believe that Schalke has different demands and therefore has to approach the matter more offensively. But we are prepared for it and we will do everything we can to ensure that we ultimately have the upper hand,” announced the HSV coach when asked by RUHR24.

Schalke 04 and HSV in a form check before the second division duel

Due to the table situation, Hamburg will go into the game on Saturday evening as favorites. However, the form of the two teams is not that different.

Schalke 04 remained unbeaten three times at the end of the first half of the season. Two wins against VfL Osnabrück (4:0) and Hansa Rostock (2:0) were followed by the final 2:2 against Greuther Fürth. The test match results during the winter break were changeable. The S04 lost 2:3 to VfL Wolfsburg, played 1:1 against Recreativo Huelva and won 3:1 against KAS Eupen. Nevertheless, Schalke showed some promising approaches before the start of the second half of the season.

HSV, on the other hand, was once again not very consistent at the end of the year. The 2-2 draw in the derby against St. Pauli was followed by the cup defeat on penalties against Hertha, the home defeat against Paderborn (1-2) and the final 2-0 win in Nuremberg. In the new year there was a 2-2 draw in the test matches against PSV Eindhoven and FC Zurich. The second leg between Schalke 04 and Hamburger SV promises excitement.
