Giovanni Reyna Determined to Leave BVB, Offers by Mendes to European Clubs

The news didn’t really come as a surprise.

Giovanni Reyna wants to leave BVB, ideally in January – that’s what ESPN reports. He is therefore “determined” to end the Borussia Dortmund chapter as soon as possible after four and a half years.

In keeping with this, the American recently changed his consulting agency, moving from Wassermann to star consultant Jorge Mendes, who is said to have directly offered his new clients to several top clubs in other European countries.

Meanwhile, BVB is said to be willing to talk – proof of how deadlocked the situation of the former top talent is at Westphalia.

It all started so magically.

Reyna should inherit Reus

Reyna came to BVB as a 16-year-old straight from New York FC’s youth academy. Together with Youssoufa Moukoko and Ansgar Knauff, he initially mixed up the U19s before being called up to the first team just a few months later and finally on January 18, 2020 under Lucien Favre in the 5-3 away win in Augsburg at the age of just 17 , two months and five days.

Reyna quickly established herself among the professionals and became a regular player after just six months of getting used to it. In his first full season, he started 23 times in 32 games and recorded four goals and seven assists. The hype surrounding the huge talent gained momentum. At BVB they were sure that they had landed the next transfer hit with Reyna.

Reyna should not only make Jadon Sancho, who moved to Manchester United at the end of the season, forget, but also follow in the long-term footsteps of club legend Marco Reus. In the event that the super talent should prefer to make the jump to an even bigger club; Well, then he would be sold to the same club for an immorally high sum.

We now know that nothing like that is the case.

Reyna raises the white flag

Reyna never managed to impress in Dortmund over a long period of time; his development stagnated under both Favre and his successors Marco Rose and Edin Terzic. His abilities are undisputed, his talent is outstanding – but a lack of rhythm due to recurring injuries prevented his big breakthrough.

In the last year and a half under Terzic, there were only five starting eleven appearances (seven goals, two assists). During this period he missed a total of 16 games – mostly due to muscular problems.

BVB has also made significant improvements in the offensive positions in recent years. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Karim Adeyemi, Donyell Malen, Marcel Sabitzer, Julien Duranville – the fight for a place in the starting eleven has become more and more complicated for Reyna – there is a lack of trust. It’s understandable that the frustration took over and the player now longs for a new start somewhere else.

It is also understandable that BVB is willing to give up Reyna.

Reyna was offered to eight teams

Mendes is said to have already contacted at least eight teams about Reyna. “ESPN” specifically names Olympique Marseille, AS Monaco, Olympique Lyon from France, Real Sociedad, FC Sevilla and FC Villarreal from Spain, as well as SL Benfica from Portugal’s capital Lisbon. Nottingham Forrest and Wolverhampton Wanderers from the English Premier League are also an option due to Mendes’ good connections to the island.

According to a report from “Sky”, BVB is said to be willing to talk from a sum of 15 million euros, and a loan deal is also possible. “I understand that there is a certain dissatisfaction. I can’t say at the moment whether he will stay,” sports director Sebastian Kehl said on SkyGo just last Sunday.

There should be no shortage of interested parties for the technically adept midfielder – especially not with a supposedly low transfer fee of under 20 million euros. The son of former Bundesliga player Claudio Reyna has “shown again and again that he can be a difference player,” praises Kehl, but sees the new competitive situation in the center as a problem for the American, who is not exactly brimming with self-confidence.

It seems that Reyna will no longer be a difference player in Dortmund. On the contrary: at the age of 21, he seems to be raising the white flag and finally closing the Borussia Dortmund chapter.
