A bitter setback in the fight for the semi-finals!
The German handball players didn’t get beyond a draw at the home European Championships against Austria (22:22) and now have to worry about reaching the semi-finals.
National coach Alfred Gislason had warned before the game: “A defeat against Austria – and the dream of the semi-finals would be over.” This warning was only partially received by the team.

The German national team’s offensive remained erratic for long stretches and produced errors on the assembly line. The successful thrower on the German side was Juri Knorr with six hits.
Our best was once again goalkeeper Andreas Wolff. In his 150th appearance for the DHB selection, he kept us in the game with strong saves. But even his performance could not compensate for the weaknesses in attack.

There was already criticism of the performance of the DHB selection at half time. Former national coach Heiner Brand made it clear on the ARD microphone: “What we showed in attack is actually not possible. That was so bad.”

After the draw, Germany is only in fourth place in Group I with 3:3 points behind France, Hungary and Austria. Because of the draw, the situation remains critical for the German team, as they absolutely have to score points in the next game to keep their chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Germany continues on Monday against Hungary (8.30 p.m. in the BILD live ticker). The next games of the European Handball Championship are scheduled for tomorrow. Then Slovenia and the Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal as well as Norway and Denmark meet in the main round Group II.
