Death of the “Emperor”: Franz Beckenbauer has died. The honorary captain of the German national soccer team was 78 years old.

Franz Beckenbauer is dead. The soccer world champion of 1974 (as a player) and 1990 (as team boss) died on Sunday at the age of 78. The news agency DPA reported this on Monday, citing his family. “It is with deep sadness that we announce that my husband and our father Franz Beckenbauer fell asleep peacefully yesterday, Sunday, surrounded by his family,” said the bereaved.

Beckenbauer had suffered from serious health problems in recent years and had withdrawn from the public eye.

Franz Beckenbauer celebrated success as a coach and player

German football has lost one of its greats with the death of the national team’s honorary captain. Wearing the DFB jersey, he won the home World Cup as captain in 1974 and the European Championship in Belgium two years earlier. The “Emperor” was on the pitch in a total of 103 international matches, including the “game of the century” in 1970 against Italy and the “Night of Belgrade” in 1976 against what was then Czechoslovakia. With FC Bayern Munich, to which the Munich native remained loyal from 1964 to 1977, Beckenbauer celebrated numerous successes at national and international level. He received the Ballon d’Or twice as the world’s best soccer player. After guest appearances at Hamburger SV and New York Cosmos, Beckenbauer ended his active career in 1983.

From 1984 onwards, the holder of the Federal Cross of Merit held the office of DFB team boss. After the European Championship title in 1988, winning the 1990 World Cup in Italy was to be his greatest triumph. His subsequent statement that the national team would be invincible for years after winning the title is well known – a mistake, as it turned out.

As president of the organizing committee for the 2006 home World Cup, Beckenbauer gave the country a “summer fairy tale”. Allegations of corruption could never be conclusively clarified because he was not charged due to his health.

For decades, the “Kaiser” was one of the most colorful figures in the German public, recording records or appearing as an advertising face (“Yes, it’s Christmas today”).

Franz Beckenbauer was married three times and leaves five children. The football world is mourning the loss of one of its greatest.
