Fortuna Düsseldorf Set for Surprise Transfer with Nuremberg Flop

The year starts with a transfer banger for Fortuna Düsseldorf!

After Klaus Allofs (67) had the budget for a new striker approved by the supervisory board shortly before Christmas (BILD reported), he now apparently has his top candidate on the hook. And this not only comes as a surprise from a competitor from the second division, but is also an absolute disappointment.

Will Fortuna grab a striker flop from Nuremberg?

BILD learned: Düsseldorf is said to be keen on Christoph Daferner (25), and discussions about a quick change are already underway. The striker is said to come from 1. FC Nürnberg, where he still has a contract until 2026. And yet the former German U18 and U20 national player (market value 600,000 euros) could still be a bargain. Because Daferner hasn’t played a role at the “club” for a long time, he didn’t even make it into the squad in the last six league games (including Fortuna’s 5-0 win in Nuremberg).

Means: NOTHING speaks against a change. Daferner really wants to leave and make a fresh start at a new club, Nuremberg wants to get the player off the payroll. So a transfer would be a win-win-win situation. Probably the only open question: Will Fortuna buy Daferner immediately or will she loan him out with a purchase option, as was actually the bosses’ plan?

Another question that many will ask: What does Fortuna want with the striker’s flop? Daferner has not only been left out in Nuremberg in the last few weeks, but has been disappointing across the board since he moved to the “club” from Dynamo Dresden for 1.1 million euros in 2022. In 1.5 years he only played 38 competitive games and a measly four goals.

It is also surprising that Allofs now wants to sign the next storm giant after Vincent Vermeij (29/1.96 meters) and Daniel Ginczek (32/1.91 meters). At 1.89 meters, Daferner is also a tall striker – but Fortuna actually wanted a different type of player than Vermeij and Ginczek, which is why they were about to sign Simon Zoller (32/now St. Pauli) in the summer. But: Daferner actually has a different style than the two Fortuna attackers and is considered to be significantly stronger. One of his great strengths is his ability to put the opposing defense under pressure. And that’s exactly what Daniel Thioune (49) wants.

Allofs actually wanted the new striker to get on the plane to Malaga with Fortuna on January 2nd and start the training camp in Marbella. At Daferner, there are currently many indications that this will not happen – but that may not be necessary. The Nuremberg team are also preparing for the second half of the season in Marbella, but they won’t be arriving until January 7th.

Daferner could move from Nuremberg to Düsseldorf in Spain…
