According to a report in the Italian sports newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport”, former world champion Jérôme Boateng is about to move to Italy. The 35-year-old, who last played in France for Olympique Lyon, should receive a five-month contract until the end of the season with the current bottom of the Serie A table, US Salernitana, the paper reported on its website on Monday.

In principle, the former Bayern Munich player has already agreed on the salary: around half a million euros. However, the club from the southern Italian city of Salerno would have to sell other players first in order not to incur additional costs. According to “Gazzetta”, Boateng should also have an option to extend his contract. His former Bayern teammate Franck Ribéry, who ended his career in Salerno in 2022, was involved in the negotiations.

Boateng became world champion with Germany at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He won the Champions League twice with FC Bayern. He currently doesn’t have a club. In the meantime there had been talks about a return to Bayern, but without success. His half-brother Kevin-Prince Boateng had played in Italy for a long time, including at AC Milan and Florence.

According to a report from Sky, the 28-year-old is willing to change, but a transfer of the Spaniard would be difficult for the Bundesliga club to implement before the transfer deadline expires on Thursday. It was said that the Bundesliga leaders had been discussing personnel since Monday evening.
