Football: Hertha President Kay Bernstein dies unexpectedly

The president of the second division soccer team Hertha BSC, Kay Bernstein, is dead. The club announced this on its website: “The entire club, its committees and employees are stunned and deeply dismayed.” Nothing was initially known about the circumstances.

“The Hertha family mourns with Kay’s survivors and is thinking of his family, friends and companions during this difficult time,” the message continued. The club asked that “the family’s privacy be respected following this terrible event.”

The former Ultra was only elected president of the club at a general meeting in June 2022. At that time, the entrepreneur was surprisingly able to prevail against the favored CDU politician Frank Steffel and another competitor. Bernstein succeeded Werner Gegenbauer, who resigned due to Hertha’s lack of success.

The capital club is currently in seventh place in the 2nd Bundesliga after 17 match days. On Sunday, coach Pál Dárdai’s team will play the first game of the year against Fortuna Düsseldorf in their Olympic Stadium.
